Characteristics of furniture made of solid wood and veneer (natural oak veneer)

Every piece of furniture made of solid wood or natural oak veneer is one-of-a-kind. This means that no two pieces will have exactly the same grain pattern or color. Wood, as a natural material, exhibits irregularities. These result from the conditions under which the tree grew or the geographic region from which it originates. Differences in pieces made from the same wood species are a natural characteristic of the material. There are three types of grain patterns: wavy, straight-grained, and figured. Each of these patterns indicates that the furniture is made of natural wood.

Two pieces of furniture finished with the same oil-wax or varnish may differ from one another because they are made from different pieces of natural wood. Wood finished with oil-wax or varnish is not stained to achieve a uniform shade. The final effect depends on the color of the grain in a given piece of wood. Only PVC laminates and modified veneers offer consistent color and grain patterns.

Due to fluctuations in temperature and humidity, natural wood expands and contracts, which can cause minor warping or cracking. These are a natural part of wood. For furniture finished with oil-wax, regular re-treatment helps minimize this expansion and contraction.

Rules for Using Furniture

  1. Each piece of furniture should be used for its intended purpose.
  2. Furniture made of solid wood or natural veneer should be used indoors, at temperatures between 8 and 36 degrees Celsius and relative humidity between 35% and 72%.
  3. Furniture made of solid wood or natural veneer should be placed at least 1 meter away from heat sources (radiators, fireplaces) and in a location where it is not exposed to direct, prolonged sunlight.
  4. The surfaces of solid wood or natural veneer furniture should be protected from direct contact with hot cookware, alcohol, solvents, cleaning agents, etc., as these can cause permanent damage to the finish or lead to discoloration or dulling of the wood.
  5. To protect the surface, it is recommended to use washers.
  6. Spilled liquids or other organic and mineral contaminants should be removed immediately after they occur.
  7. Objects with sharp edges can cause damage such as scratches, dents, etc.
  8. Furniture intended for self-assembly should be assembled according to the assembly instructions.

Furniture Cleaning and Maintenance Guidelines

  1. Furniture made of solid wood or natural veneer should be cleaned only with products designed for such surfaces. We recommend using OSMO products.
  2. Furniture should be cleaned regularly to prevent dust or dirt from accumulating.
  3. Oil-waxed furniture should be maintained at least 2–3 times a year. We recommend using OSMO oils that are compatible with the original finish. OSMO products are also available in our selection.
  4. Regardless of the material the furniture is made of, we recommend using a damp microfiber cloth to remove dirt.
  5. Do not use cleaning products that contain solvents, abrasives, dyes, or strong degreasers, or hard, rough sponges or cloths.

Additional Information

  1. All furniture undergoes a natural process of aging and wear and tear.
  2. As furniture is used over time, color variations may occur between individual pieces (extendable tables, TV stands).
  3. The samples of wood and its finishes are for illustrative purposes only. Do not expect an exact replica.
  4. Please exercise special caution when unpacking the furniture.
  5. All furniture should be unpacked immediately upon receipt.

What should you keep in mind when buying solid wood furniture?

Variety of grain patterns

Every piece of furniture made of solid wood is unique. This means that no two pieces will have an identical grain pattern or color. Wood, as a natural material, exhibits irregularities. Color Variety

As a result of UV radiation and the natural aging of wood, its color, luster, and smoothness change over time.

Types of grain found in oak wood

Flower pattern / wood flowers

This is the natural grain of the wood, creating unique patterns that are rich and intricate in form. Numerous knots, along with the intricate interplay of grain and annual rings, create the appearance of flowers on the wood. This type of grain is also characterized by its uneven coloration. The fladrowy pattern is extraordinary and elegant, which is why in past eras it was often artificially painted onto wood and other materials. Of course, in the case of our products, everything remains completely natural.

A Linear Pattern

This pattern forms when the grain of a given piece of wood is even and harmonious. With this pattern, individual knots are not visible, and the pores appear as bands of varying lengths. The annual rings are quite distinct and typically run in straight lines. In oak wood with a straight-grained pattern, the growth rays are visible; this is a characteristic specific to oak, distinguishing it from the wood of other hardwoods.

Shiny pattern

It appears as small, light-colored patches on the surface of the wood. The wood’s luster—that is, concentrated medullary rays—is one of the most exquisite grain patterns: it reflects light spectacularly and makes the wood in that area even harder. On wooden furniture, this luster is equivalent to fingerprints in humans, dispelling any doubts about the material’s natural origin.

Variety of grain patterns

There is no better material for a tabletop than natural wood.take me HOME.” uses oak—Grade A wood with knots up to 5 mm in diameter—to produce its tabletops. This wood is highly durable and features an interesting grain pattern that looks refined and elegant. You’ll find a beautifully curated selection of all types of grain patterns—straight-grained and half-straight-grained sections, as well as sections with elements of luster.

It is not possible to select a specific grain pattern.
